Wonderful stay at one of Gambia's best ecolodges. A beautiful ecolodge, professionally operated and managed by Heather and Moses. Immaculately presented the whole site was clean and accessible, a major feat having not been open for a whole season due to C19. I was their first guest for 18 months and was expecting teething problems. I looked, but could not find any! Moses provides free 4x4 vehicle trips to the local beach (around 10 minute drive) if you need to go; the wildlife was amazing on the coast - waders, ospreys, kites and much more. Birdlife was rich at the lodge too; a pair of blue-bellied rollers were living inside a dead palm tree stump just meters from the reception area. The grounds and gardens are teaming with birds and other plant and animal life. The food was amazing. All hand made and tailored exactly to my dietary requirements. You won't find anything processed or off the shelf here. All hand made, delicious and set out on a menu board each day. Thank you Heather and Moses for looking after me for my 8-days with you. The only negative was having to leave after such a wonderful time. Best wishes for the season and I look forward to returning... as soon as I can.

An Eco-lodge that lives up to expectations, and offers great hospitality. I received a warm and friendly welcome from the owner run lodge. Heather and Moses have a very hands on approach to the welfare of their guests and are backed up by good natured staff. The octagonal guest houses are well designed, very comfortable and clean, and pleasantly, everything worked. The food each night is delicious and substantial, prepared by their master chef Lasse. They have built a separate and secluded second garden that is planted with different Gambian plants, which carry the name and a short description of the uses that the Gambians have, from medicine to building and of course fire wood. Water and food is put out for the birds throughout the gardens, which of course attracts numerous species of Gambias fabulous bird life. With a plunge pool for guests, both bird and travellors, what more could be asked. Heather now offers art classes as well as excursions around Gambia. The sea is a short car ride away, that is provided by the lodge when required. There is great attention to detail, and the result is a very comfortable stay. Thank you all so much.

A great stay, as usual This was our 5th time at Farakunku lodges, and it never fails to impress. The staff are very friendly and helpful. My vegetarian wife was poorly during our stay and the chefs did wonders providing food that was suitable for her needs. We have always found the meals excellent and varied. The lunchtime Gambian dish of the day is something to look forward to. I was surprised to read the adverse comments made by the Dutch couple who were staying at the same time as us. The plunge pool is cleaned daily. I spent several hours of each day ‘soaking’ in it! It was not dirty! In my opinion some of the criticism they aimed at the owners and staff was unnecessary and unwarranted.. Farakunku is an eco lodge in Africa, visitors should not expect the facilities and amenities of a five star city hotel!. We are looking forward to our next visit to Farakunku Lodges.

Great place to stay! Farakunku lodge, with just four deluxe huts, each with their own garden space, is a delightful and comfortable place to stay. Near enough to enjoy a lovely quiet beach, as well as many birdwatching sites. Heather and Moses make everyone welcome and provide a wide range of activities with excellent guides.

Third Visit This was my third visit to Farakunku with friends. We had a lovely warm welcome from Heather and Moses and their team. We all spent time relaxing in the gardens watching the birds and also went on several excellent trips arranged by Heather and Moses - Kartong being my favourite. Thank you Heather and Moses for a wonderful two weeks.

Another fantastic birding holiday! This was our second visit to Farakunku and it was just as good as the first. Heather and Moses and the team work together to provide a superb experience where nothing is too much trouble. Our days were filled with excellent birding opportunities but as everything runs so smoothly we were able to relax as well and returned home with some life ticks and feeling refreshed . We spent some days birding from Farakunku with our friend but Heather also organised our three-day trip upriver to Tendaba and Janjanbureh. Mas was an excellent guide and Bubbacar drove us round safely. If you want well organised bird watching with relaxation I would recommend the Farakunku experience. There's also lots of opportunities to do other things as well as birding. Thank you Heather and Moses and the Farakunku team.

We also enjoyed...boat trip on R Gambia, hectic market at Serekunda, butterfly watching with a guide, walking & cycling Our second visit and just as amazing as 2 years ago. Farakunku Lodges are as brilliant as the high ratings say, so I'll simply add that, besides the bird watching, there's other possibilities too. Heather & Moses organised the boat trip, market outing, butterfly watching, walking & cycling, including all the travelling. It was always with local guides, who cheerfully answered our endless questions about the Gambian way of life, difficulties & joys. There were many other activities that we could have done but they'll have to be on our next visit. Thank you Heather & Moses for your attention to detail & making our holiday so special.

Hard to believe that all the 5-star reviews are fair, but they are! In other reviews, visitors have described the charms and warmth of the welcome at this delightful small resort. I'm not going to repeat the wealth of detail in other reviews except to say that the experience is as good as they say. I'll just focus on a few things. First, the 8 full-time staff are exemplary. The catering, housekeeping, drivers, security and ground maintenance are just as good as at any first world resort, and this is a tribute to Heather and Moses, the owners, as well as to the talents and dedication of the staff themselves. They are friendly and capable. So you can experience The Gambia, which is an adventurous destination, while enjoying creature comforts at your home base as if having a luxury weekend in Devon (but the weather is better!). The lodges are very practical, with plenty of space, a locked off room for secure storage, very large and comfortable bed, and a powerful ceiling fan. There are hammocks and loungers too on the lodge patios. Secondly, as we did bird-watching trips on 9 of the 10 days, Heather arranged the excellent itinerary, the guide (world class ability) and a driver, so you could go birding while leaving stuff safely in the vehicle with the driver. We saw 212 bird species (many stunning) but a serious birder could probably see more than 300 in 9 days. So whether you want a birding trip with creature comforts, or a relaxing break in a striking destination, this is up there with the best of them.

Welcome To Farakunku

Heather and Moses, your Anglo/Gambian hosts, offer a very warm welcome to Farakunku. Set on Gambia’s unspoilt south coast, on the outskirts of Tujereng Village, we provide secluded, deluxe accommodation for discerning travellers who seek easy-going, stylish, affordable comfort in a peaceful rural setting. Found 45 minutes from the airport, (collection service available) and just 2 kilometres from the sea Farakunku is a delightful, eco-friendly holiday destination for couples and single travellers. We have 4 large, airy, octagonal lodges, each one has its own private sun terrace and secluded seating, surrounded by lovely gardens. A plunge pool with submerged seats for cooling off is situated in one corner of the gardens… ideal for that evening glass of wine or a daytime cold beer. Relax on sun-beds, or laze in hammocks under trees.

On site we have an open-sided residents’ restaurant, offering a buffet breakfast, daytime drinks and snacks, and a set 3-course evening menu. We also have free Wi-Fi.

We are extremely proud that all of our energy is eco-friendly. We have a fully integrated solar-powered system that pumps water, provides a complete lighting solution, hot water, fans, fridges and freezers to allow the entire site to be run from eco-solutions without the need for noisy generators.

Just a few steps away, there is our studio, gallery and workshop. We also have a private tree and bird sanctuary, that offers our guests exclusive access to several thatched bird observatories with comfortable seating, a bird pool, and walkways between specimen indigenous trees and information on their medicinal and legendary properties. A growing number of recorded bird species have now made this their habitat and this is our way of protecting and improving our environment.
